These adorable cards are fun and easy to make!
- Shaving cream
- Food coloring
- Plastic knife
- White paper
- Card stock
- Pencil (optional)
Lay out the newspaper (a couple of layers thick) and make a circle out of shaving cream. Then, add drops of food coloring. Be careful! Food coloring does stain both clothes and skin. Also, you do not need many drops, only 2 or 3.
Use your plastic knife to swirl around the food coloring in the shaving cream. I twirled mine into a circle, but feel free to be adventurous and try something new!
Next, place the white paper over the shaving cream swirl and press down. The paper will become wet and fragile, so be careful when you pull it off! You can change the look of your card by pulling the paper off the shaving cream in different directions.
As I said above, your card changes dramatically depending on how you pull the paper off the shaving cream. On the top, I grabbed one corner of the paper and pulled. On the bottom, I held on to both ends and pulled them towards the center which created the “mountain” on my paper.
Now comes the boring part: waiting for your art to dry. It takes a surprising long time for shaving cream to dry (which can vary depending on how thick yours turned out and how much food coloring you used). I advice to let it dry over night, that way there will not be any issues cutting the paper because it is still wet. Just be sure to wait until the shaving cream is completely gone and the paper is dry.
There will be some shaving cream “foam” left on your paper. Use the handle part of the plastic knife and scrap it off. You can use the knife regularly, but this will create line imprints on your paper.
Turn the shaving-cream paper over (on top of newspaper – the shaving cream can leave marks on your table, which are easily washed off but are sticky), and draw the letters with your pencil.
Remember: If you draw letters, write them backwards so when you glue them down they will be right side up!
Cut the letters out and them down on folded card stock.
